Here all the remaining teeth in the mouth are removed first. It may take several months for the tissues to be healed fully, and during this period the patient is without any teeth. After the tissues have healed properly, the denture is placed in the mouth. However there is an option called immediate full denture, where the denture is placed as soon as the teeth are removed. Since the tissues take longer time to heal and to reshape, the denture may become loose and will have to be relined for several months. The advantage is that you don’t have to be toothless at any stage.
Primarily a metal frame work is attached to the normal teeth present. The denture sits on this framework. To anchor the denture, the teeth are covered with crowns.
As time goes by, the dentures need realignment or have to be remade in case of damage. Sometimes a new base will have to be made while keeping the existing denture. Natural changes occurring in the mouth may also loosen the denture. So it is advisable to have regular checkups to make sure they are working properly.
